Chiropractic is the largest most popular natural, drugless healthcare system in the United States. Over 25 million people have undergone chiropractic treatment during the past year. Chiropractic is based upon three related scientific principle which are widely accepted by the scientific community. These principles are:

1) Disease may be caused by disturbances of the nervous system.
2) Disturbances of the nervous system may be caused by abnormalities of the musculoskeletal structure.
3) Disturbances of the nervous system may cause or aggravate disease in various parts or functions of the body.

Because the spinal nerves which help control all body functions exit the spinal cord between the vertebra which make up the spine, this is of great importance to the chiropractor. When a vertebra moves out of its proper alignment or is fixated, subluxation, normal function of the spinal joints, muscles, and nerves may be diminished. This may cause interference with the normal activity of the nerves. This interference can then disturb functions throughout the body. The doctor of chiropractic is a doctor who treats or adjusts the subluxation to relieve nerve, muscle, or other soft tissue irritation and help restore the area to normal function. Research has shown that only a very small amount of pressure placed on a nerve, approximately the weight of a penny, can reduce normal nerve functioning by 60%. This will interfere with the organ or tissue that that nerve supplies. Therefore, by treating the subluxation, the chiropractor can help treat the cause of the problem rather than disguising the problem with medication.
