What is Acute Otitis Media (ear infection)?

Middle ear infection or otitis media is one of the most common early childhood diseases and probably a complication of upper respiratory infection or allergy.

Otitis media is primarily the result of dysfunctioning Eustachian tubes between the eardrum and the upper part of the throat (nasopharynx). Normally the Eustachian tube is closed and flat, preventing organisms from the nose and throat from entering the middle ear. It will open to allow drainage of secretions produced by the middle ear and to equalize pressure between the middle ear and outside environment. If this drainage is impaired, the normal secretions are retained. This will cause pressure within the middle ear.

When the tube opens, this negative pressure will result in bacteria being swept into the middle ear. Here, organisms quickly grow and cause otitis media, or ear infection.

As fluid increases in the middle ear, there will be increasing discomfort. Infants will become irritable and indicate discomfort by holding or pulling their ears or rolling their heads from side to side. Young children will verbally complain of pain. Fever often accompanies the pain.

What can chiropractic do?

Along with traditional medical treatment, studies have shown that chiropractic treatment for ear infections has been helpful. The child is gently adjusted in the upper cervical spine, which may help assist drainage to the Eustachian tubes and facilitate healing. Gentle massage along the sides of the neck is also performed, again, to help with drainage.
